I realized that there were lots of people at Burning Man over 60 last year (my first time), but they were usually by themselves or with one other person. I was part of a wonderful, interesting group of people who were all way younger than me. It was fun being part of that group and theme camp (Winking Lotus), but I kept wanting to find people closer to my age to hang out with and share the experience.

Re: What was your experience like as an "elder" at Burning Man?
Wed, April 20, 2005 - 11:01 PMStrictly speaking I'm too young at 54 (I'll be 55 when BM 2005 happens), but I am married to a woman who is 63, so maybe I can be an honorary member? Even if my wife doesn't go?
I've been to 6 burns, starting in 1999. Due to the age distribution on the playa I'm often with younger folks, but I also hang out with people who have more years than I do. I find that in most cases age makes little difference to me, although I'm not going to stay up all night partying any more. Being older does require a bit of extra moderation, especially when the desert gets especially hot.

Wed, April 20, 2005 - 11:22 PMWelcome dr. placebo!
I loved your "Make Mine Magenta" photo-both the pose AND the dress!
I see that you are also from Santa Cruz. Do you guys go to any Santa Cruz burner functions?

Thu, April 21, 2005 - 9:50 AMSo far I've only been to the film festival, but I'm open to doing more. It seems like most of the events happen when I'm already busy.
On the playa I like to take pictures, especially of the art. Here's a link to my selected BM 2004 shots:

Hope to see you in town or on the playa! -

Re: What was your experience like as an "elder" at Burning Man?
Thu, April 21, 2005 - 11:13 AMThanks for sharing your photos. Many of the art was new to me. It looks like I will have to do more exploring waaaaaay out on the playa this year. And it looks like you got there very early. I was there early too, but busy setting up our theme camp. This is going to be the year of mornings on the playa.
